In 1998, he started Dirks Landscape Design/Build Ltd (also known as Dirks Natural Playgrounds). Since 1998, we have Designed and built some of the most unique Playgrounds in the lower mainland. With an emphasis on locally sourced, sustainable materials such as red and yellow cedar, boulders and native plant materials, we make playgrounds unlike any others. Everything we do Is built to meet the CSA safety and licensing requirements.

Over two decades later, the spirit and craftsmanship that defined Dirks Landscape Design/Build Ltd. continue to thrive. The company’s legacy of thoughtful, sustainable, and locally inspired design endures under new partners and builders, guided by the collaborative leadership of Chris Goody and Paul working together. This new chapter builds upon the same core principles—creativity, craftsmanship, and community connection—that have shaped every playground and outdoor space since 1998. The legacy remains strong, with each new project honoring the tradition of natural design excellence established by Paul Dirks.

Simple process. Built to last.

Simple process. Built to last.

Simple process. Built to last.

Simple process. Built to last.

From idea to playground
in simple steps

Step 1

Design

Together with communities, schools, and families, we develop concepts that reflect local needs and the natural character of each site. Drawing on our years of experience, we design to make the best use of each area—creating sketches, design concepts, construction drawings, and engineering plans that guide the project from imagination to build. Each design balances creativity, safety, and function to lay the foundation for spaces that inspire play, connection, and discovery.

Step 2

Build & Install

In our workshop, we handcraft each element with care and precision, using locally sourced wood, stone, and natural materials that reflect the character of the landscape. Every piece is shaped, sanded, and finished by skilled builders who take pride in the details that make each project unique.

Once complete, our team assembles and installs everything safely on site, ensuring that every structure meets CSA safety standards and blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The result is a space that feels timeless—crafted to invite play, exploration, and connection to nature for years to come.

Step 3

Maintain

We provide ongoing maintenance, safety checks, and restoration services to ensure every playground remains durable, welcoming, and safe for years to come. Our team repairs, refinishes, and restores materials as needed—protecting the integrity of wood, stone, and play elements from weather and wear. By caring for each site long after installation, we help communities preserve the beauty and functionality of their spaces, ensuring they continue to inspire play and connection for generations.

Chris Goody

Partner & Head Builder

Chris brings nearly 20 years of carpentry and construction experience to Dirks Natural Playgrounds, with a background that spans full home builds, large-scale renovations, and high-end finishing work. He built his first house at just 19, establishing a strong foundation in hands-on construction that continues to inform his work today.

Over the years, Chris has developed broad expertise through renovation projects, civil engineering studies, and work with commercial construction firms, followed by several years specializing in high-end finishing carpentry. This diverse experience allows him to approach each project with a practical understanding of structure, materials, and buildability.

For more than a decade, Chris has worked independently on a wide range of residential and commercial projects, including custom millwork, wholehouse renovations, and tenant improvements. At Dirks Natural Playgrounds, he applies this depth of experience to deliver carefully executed, durable play environments, bringing a strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and craftsmanship to every build.

Chris has recently completed his home-builder certification and is on track to receive his full builder’s license by mid next year, further strengthening the construction expertise behind Dirks projects.

Guided by nature and play

Our design approach is informed by child-led, open-ended play principles and the natural characteristics of each site. We work with organic forms, varied elevations, and natural materials to create play environments that support physical development, social interaction, and imaginative use. Each layout responds to site conditions, circulation, and intended age groups, allowing the play space to function intuitively while remaining adaptable over time.

Crafted with care

We place a strong emphasis on material selection, structural integrity, and construction detailing. Our playgrounds are built using durable, high-quality materials and proven construction methods, with careful attention to joinery, connections, and finishes. This approach ensures safety, longevity, and ease of maintenance, while maintaining the natural character and tactile quality of the play environment.

Built for community

Our projects are developed through close collaboration with clients, consultants, and project teams. We consider site context, accessibility requirements, safety standards, and long-term use to ensure each playground meets both functional and community needs. By aligning design intent with practical requirements, we create play environments that serve a wide range of users and provide lasting value within public and shared spaces.

Let’s build where nature and play come together.
